Why You Need Window Treatments

“Need” is admittedly a big word. Before we get into all the aesthetic and sensorial ways window treatments will enhance your space, let’s consider the practical: they can save you money in the long run. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “about 30% of a home’s heating energy is lost through windows, and about 76% of sunlight that falls on standard double-pane windows enters to become heat.” Entering to become heat, in winter, is not awful. But in summer or in hot climates, it’s clearly not ideal.

Window coverings can help prevent energy loss, simultaneously lower your energy bills, protect your art, furniture and rugs from damaging UV rays (which can cause fading and deterioration) and add a nuanced dimension to a room. A simple way to think about it is “dress your windows as you would yourself.”

If you’re a minimalist, you might prefer a one-and-done solution like a simple roller shade, elegant wooden blinds, a tailored Roman shade or draperies.

If you believe that more is more, start with a shade, then add draperies, and maybe top it all off with a valance.
